Sheila Powell

Councilwoman Sheila Powell

Mrs. Powell was elected to Town Council in 2009. Prior to that, she served the town first as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals and then the Planning Commission. She currently serves on the Water Committee and is the Town’s Representative for the Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester Council of Government.

Mrs. Powell grew up in Awendaw and graduated from Lincoln High School. She also attended the University of South Carolina and obtained a degree in Applied Professional Sciences with course credits in Gerontology.
For the past eleven years, Mrs. Powell has proudly served as the Director of the St James Santee Senior & Community Center’s two facilities in Awendaw and McClellanville. These two facilities provide service and information to elderly residents and their families enabling elderly adults to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life. The McClellanville site also host a quality after-school program.

Mrs. Powell has received numerous awards and distinctions including: 2014 Trident United Way’s Women’s Council Leadership Award; 2013 The Concerned Citizens of District One Unincorporated Area Community Leadership Award; and, Lt. Governor of South Carolina Leadership Award for Intergenerational Programs.  She is a member of SC Association of Council of Aging, Low Country Senior Network, Sewee to Santee CDC, and Berkley Electric W.I.R.E. (Woman Involved in Rural Electrification).
A member of Mt Nebo AME Church, Mrs. Powell is President of the Women’s Missionary Society and a member of the Usher Board.  She is married to Clement Powell and they have 3 grown children.

Mrs. Powell encourages Awendaw residents to get involved in their local government. Town Council meetings are a great way to learn what is happening in the Town.
