Luckily, Awendaw did not receive the anticipated snowfall. We only received up to 1" of snow in our area. The National Weather Service has extended the Extreme Cold Advisory until 1:00 p.m. It will issue a Cold Weather Advisory for the remainder of the day and through the night, as windchill temperatures will be in the teens. Continue dripping interior faucets tonight to reduce the risk of pipes freezing. For more information about the cold weather, please visit the National Weather Service Charleston website.
The roads remain hazardous throughout the county. If you must travel, please exercise extreme caution. There will be patches of black ice on Highway 17 N and on our secondary roads. Although the snow may be melting today, black ice will still pose a threat during Monday's morning commute. As temperatures will be cold again this evening, please see the message below from the Awendaw McClellanville Fire Department on Generator and Space Heater Safety: As colder weather and potential power outages impact our area, the Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department wants to remind residents to use generators and space heaters safely. Generator Safety: • Never run generators indoors, in garages, or near windows or doors • Always place generators outside, at least 20 feet away from your home • Use extension cords rated for outdoor use • Let generators cool before refueling • Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home Space Heater Safety: • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn • Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into power strips or extension cords • Turn heaters off when leaving the room or going to sleep • Keep heaters away from children and pets This will be the last update related to this weather event. If you have more questions about the storm, the County's Community Information Line reopened at 8 a.m. to provide updates and answer questions about winter storm impacts. This number is: 843-746-3900. For other emergency information, please follow the Awendaw McClellanville Fire Department Facebook Page (here) and the Charleston County Government Facebook Page (here).
