Mayor Green has lifted the State of Emergency for Tropical Storm Imelda (previously designated as Potential Cyclone 9).
Excellent news from the National Weather Service this morning! Based on the latest forecast, the storm is taking a hard right turn and tracking away from coastal South Carolina. At this time, Charleston County’s anticipated impacts are limited to 2–4 inches of rain and minor beach erosion.
The Town of Awendaw is continuing to monitor what is now Tropical Depression Nine. Governor Henry McMaster declared a State of Emergency for South Carolina at 5:00 PM Friday. Mayor Miriam Green also declared a State of Emergency for the Town of Awendaw today at 11:30 am. A copy of this statement can be viewed here.
According to the latest from the National Hurricane Center, the disturbance is forecast to strengthen this weekend and could be at or near hurricane intensity when it approaches the southeast U.S. coast early next week. The primary threat to Awendaw is expected to be heavy rainfall and strong winds, which could arrive as early next week. There are still sandbags available at town hall. Residents who would like to obtain sandbags can do so at any time, but they must bring their own shovel. Sandbags will be available while supplies last. We are urging residents to pay attention to local meteorologists' forecasts as the storm progresses. The Town will continue to follow guidance from federal, state and county leaders and will provide updates throughout the weekend. Town of Awendaw officials are closely monitoring AL94, a disturbance in the Central Caribbean Sea/Southwestern Atlantic, and remain in close communication with Charleston County Emergency Management.
The disturbance is expected to develop into a named storm in the coming days, potentially affecting the South Carolina coast. However, it is still too early to determine whether our area will experience any impacts. To prepare for possible effects, the Town of Awendaw has ordered 1,000 sandbags and sand to be delivered to Town Hall at 6971 Doar Road. Residents who would like to obtain sandbags can do so at any time, but they must bring their own shovel. Sandbags will be available while supplies last. The Town will continue to provide updates as the weekend progresses. |
